I saw in  WNYF Engine 16 acting Rescue 2 and I was wondering is it really possible for an Engine or Truck or even a Squad to act as a Rescue or An Engine or Truck or Rescue to act as a Squad ?

In 1995, Squad 41 relocated to R 1 during the fire at The St. George Hotel in Brooklyn.

I think Engine 16 was a spoof or Ladder 7.  Ladder 7 being a Soc Truck.

When a significant number of units will be committed to a fire scene for a fairly long length of time their home areas must be protected by other units.  When those units responded to a different companies area they are noted as acting for that company such as stated above.

When a unit is acting, they move to another neighborhood to keep a minimum level of fire protection. They protect that neighborhood, although sometimes depending on where that units is relocated to, they may go back to their original neighborhood acting as the other company. Example, Engine 16 is relocated to act as Engine 1. A Box comes in for 34th Street and 5th Avenue. Engine 16 responds first due, as opposed to second or third due if they were in their own quarters. I hope that helps.
