they may go back to their original neighborhood acting as the other company. Example, Engine 16 is relocated to act as Engine 1. A Box comes in for 34th Street and 5th Avenue. Engine 16 responds first due, as opposed to second or third due if they were in their own quarters. I hope that helps.

Really?  Are you sure about that?  I've never had that happen, I thought once you were acting, you were acting and that was it.  Unfortunately, I get relocated a lot.........just my bad luck I guess.

Found a good picture of Engine 161 acting Rescue 1.

When R1 was reported as possibly closing, Engine 161 was selected to cover:

"First Arriving Rescue or Engine Travel Time:   3:44 Pre-Closing     48:12 Post-Closing
Second Arriving Travel Time:                           6:16 Pre-Closing     92:36 Post-Closing

Post-closing travel time was within acceptable limits.
There is limited structural fire activity in Manhattan.
Rescue among less active units, ranks low in medical runs.
E 161 to pick up extra tools and maps at Home Depot before leaving SI."

Sorry guys - maybe the picture is not very accurate.  I just loved the phrase "Post-closing travel time was within acceptable limits" (from proposed closing Engine and Ladder Company Analysis  May 18, 2011  Draft) and wanted to use the words somewhere.

We sometimes do short hops, JB. Doesn't happen all the time, but I was just using this as an example. You may see it more if you're driving the chief, and there's one of these big drills where downtown picks out all the relocators, something like Battalion 6 to Battalion 8. Fire duty is a different story altogether.
Step up or Shut up!!!

JB - Another example of a nearby relocation is when a company which requires a relocator if 10-99, is unavailable for fire duty for an extended period of time (at a fire, performing CPR, assigned to explosive escort duty).  I have relocated to the next engine company north of me because of this.  Now, I'm only referring to a select set of companies which hold this special designation because of their geographic location (companies near the city line, companies in neighborhoods where second or third arriving companies may be delayed due to bridge crossings, etc...).   Hope this helps.
