Rescue 4
« on: October 17, 2011, 12:40:52 AM »
I am working with the Remembrance Rescue Project to restore Rescue 4. I have re-created Rescue 3 (Big Blue) and Rescue 4 (Popeye) Station Shields for the rear cab doors. We wish to keep things legitimate and follow any copyrights that might be in place. So I am looking to contact someone from Rescue 3 and 4. Can anyone give me some direction or help. Fellow Firefighter for Chicagoland.

I had a quick question. I was a marine corp firefighter and a contract firefighter in Iraq. I currently am on a roster for beach park. I live in des plaines and am very interested in volunteering to help rebuild rescue 4 would that at all be possible.

Hey James, I saw the photos that you took from the Chicagoland Speedway in Joilet. That is how I found this site. I am working on the graphics and lettering restoration with the assistance of my two sons. We are nearing the completion of the vinyl work. That will leave the hand painting of the large R 4 Station Shield and the FDNY Rescue Shield on the upper portions of the box sides. This part will fall on my shoulders since the boys haven't acquired the old school method of hand brush work. I appreciate your interest and suggest going to this web page and leave your info. I am sure Chris from Skokie Fire, who is heading up the project will be happy to hear from you.

By the way how are the folks over in Beach Park or as I used to know it as Bonnie Brook. I got my start at Newport and worked on a few jobs with the folks in the Beach. I grew up in Wadsworth and I'm very familial with area up there. Take care and stay safe!

Everything is great over at beach park, I have been on Family LWOP since my son was born. Im still trying to find a full time department and am actually hoping that skokie will be that one since I will be taking there test in a few weeks. Newport has been at our station quite a few times doing station coverages. Thank you

This is to the best of my knowledge. The rig 96'HME is original except for the cab rear doors. The curb side door is from R3 and has been relabeled as found, in honor of the fallen R3 crew from W.T.C. The drivers side was a replacement door, manufactured from diamond plate, very heavy. This has be painted and labeled a R4 in its post 9-11 state, to honor their loss. The lower portion of the rig, red part was repainted. Most of the dents and dings were left. The owner wanted R4 to reflect the heritage of a work horse and as a not clean pristine parade rig. Most of the lettering and striping has been replaced as close to its original state. This includes the Station Shields for both R3 and R4, this was the reason for the original post. Some of the lights may have been replaced, as many were broken. All the tools were removed, except for the generator and it still works. The rear of the interior of the box still has the hand written labels on the doors where the different equipment was stored. I have photos that I would love to share, but have had problems posting them.

For now it has been confined to the Chicagoland area, attending multiple outings every weekend. I do know that Chris's (the owner) goal is to expand from just the Chicago area and at sometime have R4 to tour other Cities. You can imagine the fuel cost alone in doing this. His is definitely looking for interest from other Cities and New York is one. I have told him that if R4 does make a return to New York that I very much would like to be part of it. Please stat in-touch and let us know if there is interest in doing this.

This is to the best of my knowledge. The rig 96'KME is original except for the cab rear doors. ....

FYI - Just want to clarify what appears to be a typo.
The rig is a 1996 HME/Saulsbury.  Not a KME.
HME = Hendrickson Mobile Equipment
KME = Kovatch Mobile Equipment

R4 in the early restoration. Ignore any of the time stamps on the photos they are not correct.
