When all is done you will no longer need to monitor the VHF (154.190 etc.)  You will have a new UHF freq for each boro.  EMS will just be moved around a little.

Swapping out the VHF mobiles for UHF would be a monumental task.  Don't see how they could do a rapid switchover....unless...maybe the units in the field will all be using HT's, as does the PD.

If they broadcast over the VHF and UHF together, then they just switch over when they want to..  Wouldn't need to switch over everthing at one time.

Incremental switchover while using 2 freq's... that makes sense.   Guess I just didn't think of the obvious.  2 demerits.

Wonder if we should infer from the long list of channels that this will be a trunked system?

bklyndisp54;

Two systems...  Look at the first post.
This list is for the 7 Fire and 13 EMS Dispatch Channels.

FDNY108;
As far as digital goes this will not have any digital on it.  There will be some digital on the trunked system, FDNY already has a few digital TG's on the 800 DOITT system.

Just curious it has been a while since the last update on the radio system.

Everything remains the same and work is still going on..  Digital will only be on the trunked system and should not be the entire system just a few talkgroups.

Recently, I tried to program these frequencies into my portable scanner. It has ultrahigh but when programming these frequencies, because of the eight digits total, my scanner would not accept it. Any ideas on what type of scanner is needed. No problem entering other UHF frequencies.

because of the eight digits total, my scanner would not accept it.

The FCC mandated closer channel spacing, and with it, more accurately tuned xmtrs and more selective receivers.

Any "older" scanner ought to be "wide" enough to copy these channels if you enter just as much of the freq. as your radio will take.

Example, instead of entering 486.12345, enter 486.123.

But you still might have prob's if your scanner will only accept channels in 5/10/12.5 kc steps.

FWIW, the R-Shack PRO-97 will program 6.25kc steps and accept the channels on the new FD list.

Thank you very much for the above information. I"m a buff from Connecticut and get down to NYC about once a month. I will try it again when I am down there. I appreciate the info. Also does that R-Shack Pro-97 pick up digital and is it portable.

Uniden and GRE as well as Radio Shack all have portable as well as base station scanners they can handle all the frequencies including digital and analog.  Actually Uniden and GRE make all of the Radio Shack radios so you may be better off with one of them.  Here's a web site: Radio Reference with lots of discussion about scanner types, advantages, etc.  It may be helpful in making your choice.
