Probie Assignments
« on: January 05, 2012, 12:03:09 AM »
At one time I read a post somewhere on the internet about this topic and i cant seem to find it anymore.
When a probie finishes the academy how are they assigned to a company? i know there are hooks and rabbai and things like that
but I had read that you are assigned based on single engine houses having a certain priority and busy trucks with slow engines and vice versa. Idk if this makes sense but any feedback would be nice  :-[

Yes people w/ good hooks may get their choice....but generally the lowest Company rosters will be filled in w/probys regardless of  E or T........by the time the FDNY gets probys graduated due to the current court crap it will be anybody's guess where they will go.

When I went through, If you had a good enough hook you could go where you wanted. For those without a hook, the squad leaders and valedictorian gave a list of choices in and they got one of them. The rest of us just gave our choice of borough. Which i got.

When i went through the rock, they asked us all where we would want to be assigned to, the truck or engine. I dont know if that had any effect on where we went. But probably like everything else, they were sent to where they were needed.

Another translation besides "Rabbi" could be: Godfather, Rich Uncle, "person(s) in a high place", etc..... ;D

Ok, can some one tell me what a HOOK is???

It's either this: http://www.allhandsfire.com/NY-ROOF-HOOK-WITH-PRY-END OR this: http://www.fotosearch.com/DGT145/opw0047/
.......i really get a laugh out of some of these tool companies & the names & uses they come up w/for their products......if you listened to some of them they would like you to buy a hook for each different type task...roof ...closet ....basement etc.....the hook that this particular ad refers to as a NY roof hook is a copy of the original Halligan Hook invented by FDNY DC Hugh Halligan when he was a DC in DV*4....(RIP to both the Chief & DV*4).....the text in the add claims that the chisel end was added by the Research & Development unit.....more bull....it was added to existing Halligan Hooks by  FFs in the field years ago.......this is a universal do all hook tried & proven.....the fiberglass knockoffs are crap.........getting back to the proby school thing....also many years in the past those w/out a hook often were sent to Cos based on their height....taller to LADs ...shorter to ENGs.....i remember some LAD CPTs in the past rejecting an applicants transfer if the applicant was too short........does anybody remember the photo of 3 FFs opening up the front of a store cieling w/hooks & 1 was standing on a box?.

I had a retired FDNY member tell me thirty years ago that assignments were based on height. He said 6 foot or over Truck Company under six foot, Engine Company. Then he said I was too short for the engine! I'm 5'8"! :-[

.......when i was a CPT & i knew we were going to get a proby from the current class i would have my spys & or  scouts on the rock line up some good prospects.....twice when i put my bid in for a particular proby my choices  were squeezed out..... one by the  top Physical Fitness award winner & the other by the class Valedictorian.......they both turned out to be good guys luckily.....& the Valedictorian certainly was smart .....made BC in 14 years.

Years ago before the height requirement on the entrance test was struck down some candidates who were an inch or less below the minimum would sleep on the floor the night before then have friends transport them to the physical exam on a backboard...they would not stand up until their turn to get their height measured.....they managed to gain enough to pass.......considering just about everything has been stuck down by the courts i am surprised that the mandatory retirement age of 65 has remained in the FDNY.
