Why San Francisco still counts on street fire alarm boxes

It's nice to see that S.F.F.D.'s Chief of Department is openly supporting street alarm boxes and citing good reasons for keeping them...

Boston also still uses fire alarm boxes.

They still pick up fires and emergencies.   I think they respond with an engine and a truck.

Not everyone has a cell phone or BB which is charged and operational.

I know some folks get on this kick thinking everyone has a cell phone and fire boxes are useless...during my recent trip to NJ & NY my cell phone died and couldn't get one until I returned to VA. I drove around and visited my family & FDNY friends, sometimes late at night when everything is closed and in some areas where fire boxes are now gone.

Get the point ?

From the SF article:

"'When someone pulls the alarm, a telegraph wheel taps out a message to the nearest fire station, announcing the box number.  The call comes straight to us, without having to go through the dispatcher, like a 911 call does,' said fire Lt. Karen Kerr. "

Say WHAT?

What about AFID, drill, meal runs, 10-8, etc., etc.?

In response to vbcapt, I have been in that situation. I work for a delivery company, I have a company car and phone. Left Chi town for Wisconsin, a 200 mile trip. Thanx to Verizon I had no phone contact with my company. I could NOT find a phone booth all the way up there. Got back to Chicago, they bitched because I was not in communication with them, they wanted to know how long before I deliver. Must have really made you mad, 2 minutes, 2 hours or x hours. Love to screw with them, they think it is immediate response. They have no idea, GOOGLE says 53 minutes, they compute that @ 2AM on a Sunday morning. I am in heavy traffic @ 70MPH, makes Talladega look like a Sunday afternoon drive

Back in August Boston had a 2nd alarm fire and first notification was from a street box. Scroll down alittle and you can read the story.
