Excellent story of a fire that I remember well. I was playing basketball after school at PS 249 on Caton Avenue and Marlborough Road, several miles from the pier on fire. When the blast occurred, it knocked out on the windows in the gym. The teacher in charge accused us of breaking the window with the basketball. We ran outside to see the huge column of smoke in the sky even though we were so far away. Many civilian deaths of people just watching the fire.
The article refers to Lt. Bob Lindgren of L 101, detailed to E 202. He was my first Captain at Engine 248 in 1964 and the father of our buddy on this site, 69 Mets.

I remember that day well lived a few blocks from E280 & L132, where I buffed starting in 1952 (10yrs old). The Blast and vibration was heard and felt for miles. The area surrounding the Luckenbach Pier was damaged with broken windows etc. as far up as Greenwood Cemetary on Fifth Ave.
