This is the anniversary of the Great Chelsea Conflagration. At 4PM a box was received as well as a phone call for a fire in the rag town part of the city. First units found a heavy fire condition, they were hampered by low water pressure and strong winds. By the time it was controlled 18 blocks were destroyed, units were dispatched from 90 departments and four states. In the end this was the best thing that happened to the city, it set in motion a large urban renewal project. It is said that was the first incident where the word "conflagration" was used over the radio, by Chief Fothergill, to describe a situation. Boston sent 10 engines, 4 ladders and 3 chiefs to the fire.
