No dog in this fight, KUDO to those who STUDIED for the test, I am sure you will make FDNY proud. I took the Boston test in 1971, I had a veterances preferrence for 10 points and also an additional 5 point for suffering a wound in combat. ACLU sued, saying the test was discrimitory to those who were not veterans. Some liberal judge said ALL should be considered, regardless of military service, no one made a veteran any better than joe blow. Well a VETERAN is the one who goes into service to enforce the wishes of those who will NOT go into harms's way. My father was a B-17 gunner over Europe, Schweinfurt/Regensburg were his missions, 60/243 never came home. I flew over SVN.NVM.La2s, came home. My son did 2 tours in Iraq as a CFR/FF at Ramadi, Camp TQ, Al-Asad. But I feel a lawsuit, feel sorry for those who did great but, there is a lawyer with an agenda.

Can anyone explain the points awarded for the letter V,P,R,S,D.  Is there going to be a physical test added to the overall score? Thanks

Explains the letters before the names

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services made public a 40,864-name list for Firefighter on Oct. 3, 2012. The list is based on Exam 2000, which was held from March 17 to April 20, 2012.

Readers should note that this roster has not yet been officially established for use and that once established, an eligible list changes over its four-year life as candidates are added, removed, reinstated, or rescored.

Some scores are prefixed by the letters v, p, r, s and d. The letter “v” designates a credit given to an honorably discharged veteran who has served during time of war. The letter “d” designates a credit given to an honorably discharged veteran who was disabled in combat. The letter “p” designates a “legacy credit” for a candidate whose parent died while engaged in the discharge of duties as a NYC Police Officer or Firefighter. The letter “r” indicates that five points were added to the final score of a candidate for being a resident of New York City. Finally, the letter “s” designates a “legacy credit” for being the sibling of a Police Officer or Firefighter who was killed in the World Trade Center attack on Sept. 11, 2001.

All of them are worth 5 points each. You either get a 'D' or a 'V' not both.

So it's possible to get 20 points ?

Yep Mike. Those 5 extra points most likely decide if your getting hired or not.

From what I was told by a friend who took the test, I believe the above information is incorrect.

Here is what I was told:
V = 5 pts.  or   D = 10 pts.
P = 10 pts.
S = 10 pts.
R = 5 pts.

So Max Bonus Points would be 35.

These numbers also appear to be accurate to me based on briefly analyzing the information in the list.

You could be right, I was just basing the info from previous tests.

So when ever they call you its in order from 1st- whenever they stop? or can it just be like if someones not old enough to be hired yet they would put him/her on hold and move on to the next list number?

Glad to see vets being taken care of, but I have questions. How can you be eligible for "D" if you are a honorably discharged vet who was disabled in combat. Secondly P/S points, one is for your parent, the other is for your brother/sister, correct? You cannot collect 10 + 10. Just kinda confused but then again I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer! ;D ;D ;D

The first hires will come off of the EMS promotional test #2500. Once they go through all 800 of them they will then start using names off of test #2000. For a class of 300 they will probably go all the way up to number 1000 on the list. They take into account people not passing medical or physcial, deferring it, not being old enough and people just not wanting to do it anyone. The remaing people would make up the 300 academy class.

Guys not wanting the job anymore. Man this is one of the best jobs, after being a Marine, you get to be among the best of the best, up there with LA, Chicago, and Boston but not in that order. Why bother taking the test, maybe you elimated another prospect. Best 10 minutes of Full Metal Jacket shows yours useless devotion to the job. My son would         for this job, draw your own conclusions for the vacant space. This ain't a civil service job, you screw up someone might die
