Deano , just wondering when VB made to switch from Volunteer to Combination to paid. I was at a conference in the early 80's with a chief from VB and if I remember correctly it was combo then? Am I dreaming that up?

The original "town" of Va. Beach (early 1900's) was only the oceanfront area & had one firehouse with career members. The town merged with Princess Anne County in the early 1960's which made the City of Va. Beach. During the late 1960's to early 1970's is when they started hiring more firefighters and they were placed in the volunteer firehouses. The hiring trend continued for many years.

Currently there is one volunteer company left and they perform support functions only with Support 8, which is basically a fancy MSU/air truck with other ancillary equipment. Citywide there's only 3 or 4 volunteer firefighters remaining and we no longer take on anymore volunteer firefighters since around the late 1990's to 2000.

Deano, a guy told me he is starting Probie School in VB on January. I told him that I knew a Captain on the job there and when he finishes Probie School and gets settled into a company to look you up. I really don't know the guy, but he seems interested.
How many Probies are starting in January.

About 35-40.

He may see me while he's in Probie school, sometimes I help with the live burns or I stop by while they're in the classroom to see how attentive they are.

One of the FF/PM's that worked in my Battalion in Albemarle County just started the Recruit School in VA Beach.  I wish her and all the rest of the future VBFD recruits the best of luck and a happy and safe career.  VBFD always seemed like it would be a great place to work!
