Seventeen pages of some of the GREATEST FIREFIGHTERS to ever live. Each and every one could tell most of us unbelievable stories that will never be repeated again in the future of the entire fire service.

May they all Rest in Peace. They were not only a very special breed of firefighters, but many were military veterans that saw combat activity as young individuals. Most were Role Models and never even knew it. Very few ever talked about themselves or what they did. Only those fortunate enough to be with them during their duties, will really ever be able to appreciate what these members did.

Many stories about Jimmy Basile all true .....a few more....in Aug 1971 we (108/35) had just moved into the then new qtrs on Union Av 216 was not scheduled to move in until a few weeks later but one night 216 was supposed to come over for dinner & to discuss the upcoming merge of the commissaries etc we made the traditional "half chicken a man".....216 had been ordered to bring the Rig to the shop for what was thought to be a while you wait repair which turned into a major job & the ENG called us said they were going to grab some chow near the shops so we now had seven extra half chickens in the oven (back then ENGs had proper manning w/six FFs & an Officer) Jimmy had gotten off a day tour in 102 & stopped by to check out the new qtrs... of course he was hungry so we gave him a half chicken....long story short by about 2300 he had polished off all seven halves...all the bones were picked clean like they had been sandblasted.......Jim often did not wear LTs bars on his collar ...one day a new Chief asked him why he had no bars on...Jimmy leaned close to the Chief & whispered in his ear "when we hit the beach the snipers target the Officers"....the Chief just walked away ....... when the interchange was winding down 111 was one of the last to be on it but when Jimmy worked he would call the other Company & tell them not to come...one of the BCs did not like this so on the next night they were supposed to interchange he came to qtrs @ the start of the tour & told Jimmy "i better not see any 111 Frontpieces tonight"....Jimmy said OK then went up into the office & made Frontpieces & signs for the Rig w/the other Companies number on them out of cardboard & markers....on the 1st run w/that particular BC he took one look & just shook his head & walked away ......we (R*2) had a dive job for a teenager in the old Highland Park resevoir...we recovered the fellow but he did not survive .....the next tour we went back to the reservoir for a drill & to critiqe the recovery...it was around 1000 hrs & it was very quiet in the Park ....all of a sudden we heard a clomping sound coming down the path....it was Jimmy in between night tours jogging w/Combat Boots on...we said what are you doing ? he w/out missing a beat replied "gotta get the toxins out".....one time he put his arm through a window severly cutting it...we went to visit him in BKLYN Hosp...his bicep was outside his arm in a cheesecloth like sling ...it hurt just to look at it....he took it all in stride & fully recovered..... those who never met Jimmy might after hearing the stories of mammoth eating habits might envision an overweight out of shape guy...this could not be farther from the true picture...he was a wiry physically fit picture of health...& a true gentleman...GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN......Obit & photo gallery....    http://obits.dignitymemorial.com/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=James-Basile&lc=4467&pid=172916394&mid=6169513

Knew Chip when he came on the job in L-132. Nice guy, laid back, good firefighter. We used to tease him about being a Rockaway beach bum. Rest in Peace.
