Roosevelt Island Bridge Closed 4/15-17 Possibly 4/21-22
« on: April 14, 2009, 04:25:53 PM »
I was curious for opinions of this group regarding the following info.  I am assuming SOC will taking equipment off the island during these periods.

- Eric (Roosevelt Island 360)

The Roosevelt Island Bridge is slated to be closed starting tonight 4/15 from 12:30am to 5:30 am possibly through 4/17 and additionally on 4/21-22.

The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation additionally stated that:

2. The Fire Department will station an engine (pumper) and a ladder truck on the Island during the outage to respond to any emergencies. In addition, there will be a fireboat available to deliver additional personnel if a big emergency occurs. An engine company (with 5 firemen) will be at the Vernon Ave. end of the Bridge to provide additional bodies as needed.

3. The Fire Dept. (EMS) will station an ambulance on the Island and an ambulance at the Vernon Ave end of the bridge. In the event of a medical emergency, the victim will be treated and taken to the RI end of the bridge and conveyed on a gurney to the other side where the other ambulance will be waiting to transport. In addition to the 4 EMS persons, there will be the 5 firemen there to assist. If the bridge is completely impassable (one of the procedures will require it to be 6'-8' above the connecting streets), then transport will have to be by Tram to a waiting ambulance on Manhattan side.

Based on the content of the original post as it describes planned FDNY operations at the Roosevelt Island Bridge would this post be better categorized under Fire Operations?

I heard Queens tell one of the Queens BCs that the Island Bridge had been canceled for tonight.

About 10,000 plus live on the Island plus two long term care hospitals.  There currently are two additional buildings under constructions, both about 10-15 stories, with plans for three more.

It is possible last night's bridge closure was cancelled as my understanding was that the work scheduled would be affected by the rain.  They scheduled the 4/15-17 in case one day rained and 4/20-21 as backups if this week was completely washed out.

I sent an inquiry into the Roosevelt Island PSD director asking whether any incidents occured that required actions by the FDNY or EMS personnel that were supposed to be stationed on the island side of the bridge but I have not received a reply yet.

I am assuming they also kept an NYPD cruiser on island as the night before there was an incident involving a shot fired outside an apt complex just over the bridge and down on Main Street.

Can't believe they don't have a fire station on the island or at least vollies. Oh well.

No fire house on the island except for SOC which is not obviously a primary responder as I understand it.  Engine 260, I believe,  is the primary as I see that unit and Ladder 116 most frequently on the island.

Someone on this site once pointed me to a website that showed the closest firehouses on a map when you entered a zip code or something like that.  I can't seem to recall that site so if anyone can refresh my memory that would be appreciated.

The firehouse on the island was built to house an engine company. A few years ago, they were going to move E260 into the Roosevelt Island firehouse fire with L116 moving over to E260's house and E261 remaining where they were. As we all know, it wasn't done and E261 has since been disbanded. ???

Is that when Special Operations Command moved onto Roosevelt Island?

My understanding was that SOC was there before 9/11 so the possible move for E260 must have been before that?

Am I correct in remembering the Engine housed on Roosevelt/Welfare Island was Engine 49?   I forget when they were disbanded but I know that is on someone's website

E-49 was quartered on Roosevelt Island until they were disbanded. I want to say sometime in the 50's. SOC has been there for as long as I can remember.

Yes, Engine 49, actually a combination company consisting of an engine, hosewagon & ladder truck was there from March 18, 1882 to Sept. 21, 1958. Whenever additional help was needed, Manhattan and Queens units would respond halfway across the Queensboro [59th St.] Bridge where an elevator located inside of the bridge tower over the island would take them down to the island. The elevators were too short for long apparatus and some older Ahrens-Fox pumpers had a folding rear step hinge so that they could fit inside the elevator. When the 36th Avenue bridge to L.I.C. was completed, Queens units of any size were then be able to respond in from there without having to wait for a ride down. During the E49 era there wasn't much population on the island then known as Welfare Island other than the two hospitals, a prison and the old Fire Academy. Today it is known as Roosevelt Island where 10,000 residents in mostly high-rise apartment buildings.

So in what year was the move to Roosevelt Island contemplated for E260 and why did it not happen?
