New Server for 2015
« on: April 02, 2015, 10:39:29 AM »
Our host has made a deal with us for  a new server.  Probably won't be ready until next month, need time to transfer all the data.  Goal will be to keep our current IP address to make the move as simple as possible.

Great news, Tom.  Thanks for all you do.  BTW:  Willy D asked a question last month about what happens if you have a catastrophic failure of the site:

I told him that you probably backed everything up on a routine basis, but I think it would ease his mind if YOU told him (he has learned not to trust me . . . wise man).

Tom, I have confidence in whatever you do for this site.

I am concerned as Ray mentioned that some of the stories and threads throughout this site are priceless. If they were ever lost we would never see anything like them again. And so many members have contributed to make those stories, comments, photos, videos all so valuable.

Some of those members may have passed on. They may be unable to post as most of us know of one member who is well respected throughout the FDNY but suffered a very serious stroke. The History of the firehouses, Storm Sandy, My younger buff years, the serious incidents that FDNY handled over the years that made history etc.

Even the cyber space chit chat that has gone far beyond the firehouse kitchen table but entertained us across the world on this web site. Almost a form of Brotherhood all of its own. We are friends because of this and many of us watch out for each other as Brothers. One of us gets sick, we know about it. A grandchild is born, we know about it.

We all have the same interest. It is in the Fire Service and especially the FDNY.

And from reading other threads here, it seems like some of those guys even know when and where I go on vacation. For those who are not aware, it's spring break in Fla right now for those young college kids. Where else would an old fat guy go for a little fun and relaxation.

Our emergency plan for a catastrophic server failure is to gather our kids and as much beer and Coke without ice as we can carry and head to the Catskills.  ;D ;D

Ah, I see that my faith in humanity in the Information Age is well placed.  In fact, truck4, your emergency plan is probably a lot more comprehensive and better thought out than most organizations, private or government.

Just to let everyone know, we do have the new server purchased and running.
Now the fun part is moving over to it and updating all the info.

We run 4 sites off the server Nycfire.net & Fireapparatusjournal.com and 2 other small private sites which don't do much.
The 2 small sites have been moved and tested with no issues so far.
FAJ is the most complex because of the shopping cart and credit card processing rules.
Going to try and update FAJ to the latest software while I have both servers running. Best time to test.

Nycfire.net is just large and takes time.
Also going to see if there is reason to change the software we use, will let you all know.

I agree, Tom, but what about backups . . . or was Truck4 being serious?

Willie D is at spring break in Florida?  I think I saw him on MTV hip-hop dancing on the beach surrounded by bikini clad college girls…and he was in a speedo... :o 8)

You REALLY didn't need to plant that image (Willy in a Speedo) in my mind, Steve.
