As others have said I'm surprised a BC didn't respond with the assignment. I'd also like to know how much went on behind the scenes to authorize this deployment. I'm sure there isn't a mutual aid agreement in effect between Hilburn and FDNY. Unless FDNY has some kind of agreement with Con-Ed for response to their facilities I'm sure there was a lot of conversation before the units were dispatched.

I don't think I've ever heard of a mutual aid run for the FDNY that far.

I know in 1987/89 (?), the FDNY responded to Bridgeport, Ct when a 12 story building under construction collapsed. That run was about 60 miles and they ended up operating there for about a week and a half. It was actually before the first USAR teams were organized.

Unconfirmed report from another site stated that the Fire was burning for 15 hrs before Con Ed requested the FDNY Purple K response.

It probably took that long to get everyone's approval so they could respond! Just being able to contact the right people on the weekend was probably a chore.

Some additional info that was posted on another site which explains the delay...QUOTE..
Post by dabx
The fire started Friday evening and the primary concern is runoff contaminating the local river and aquifer, hence the request for purple k. Fdny has purple k in quantity that few places have, and we have good working relationship with con Ed.
Using water and foam would have made runoff A problem where there wasn't one. The burning oil was contained in the equipment so they decided to let it burn off over night Friday, and work in the relative safety of daylight with PK ..UNQUOTE.

The FDNY responded up to White Plains a few years back for a fire in a Con-Ed substation (I believe also a Purple K response). At the same time, White Plains had a multi-alarm fire going at the Bengal Tiger fire on Post Road.

Yes, I believe only E-84 came to White Plains.
