This type of fire is unprecedented in the UK, we never thought something on this scale would happen.

Itís still very much ongoing so I cant give you too much detail just yet, but what I can tell you is this was a 40 pump fire. To put this into context here in the UK we donít use the system of 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th alarm. We request the resources we need when we need them, so for example three pumps (engine companies) would have been mobilised to this incident as per all high-rise incidents. The incident commander will then ask for more pumps or resources when he requires them, if he requires another three pumps then the message Ďmake pumps 6í will be sent, then increased as required, make pumps 10, 12, 15 and so on. It is generally considered that the biggest is a make pumps 20, this will bring around 120 guys to the scene not including special apparatus like ladders, rescue, command etc. This incident was make pumps 45!!! There hasnít been anything like this since the 1970ís. In terms of a response, I would liken to a 10th or 12th alarm.

Again, as this is in its infancy, we cant speculate as to what happened, other than this started on the 2nd floor (3rd floor as you guys will know it) and spread to involve each of the 27 floors of this residential high rise. Now residents have said the building was refurbished a year or so ago, and witnesses on the scene said the fire appeared to Ďjumpí up the side of the building.
This points to the external cladding they fitted to the side of the building for cosmetic purposes. The company responsible for the refurbishment have today removed all references to this project from their website.

Iíll keep you all updated but the London guys are already talking of a Ďonce in a career fireí.

A tragic event.

Remarks from British politicians:

     "Unprecedented"
     "This could never happen here"
     "London mayor devastated"
     "Something went badly wrong"

- Maybe the 2013 closure of 10 London Brigade fire stations and 27 fire companies, the reduction of over 500 firefighters and cutting $150M from London Fire Brigade budget should be re-examined.

"Remarks from British politicians:

       'This could never happen here'"

A concept that should have been retired at 8:48 AM, September 11, 2001.    The politicians have to learn and accept this basic truth and provide sufficient funds and assets to deal with "unforeseeable" events.  Nothing should any longer be considered "unforeseeable", "unlikely" or "impossible".

Its a kick in the teeth to the guys, because the same pen pushing politians who are applauding them and calling them heroes, are the same pen pushing politians who closed stations, took away apparatus and pretty much called the British Fire Service a 'thorn in the side'.

I have always found the operation of the LFB very interesting.  They are the fifth largest fire service in the world and their aerial apparatus fleet consists of 7 Aerial Ladder Platforms and 4 Turntable Ladders (per Wikipedia).  Hopefully British Andy will be able to post a rundown of this tragic incident sometime in the future.
