I have not seen the particular SP shirt & i do not remember what they had if any originally but either way that is a crazy price for any tee shirt...... it may or may not be original.....there are for example patches on e bay that people make up & call original for Units that never even had one.

Ghetto FF on e bay.....   http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ghetto-Fire-Fighter-Harry-J-Ahearn-New-York-Fire-Department/191609721753?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131017132637%26meid%3Daec1c04d2301477bab27be7965bff395%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D191609721753

The book "Ghetto Firefighter", as I remember, was really one of the first books written to explain the conditions that firefighters of busy FDNY ghetto companies faced. I remember reading it before "Report from Engine Co 82" came out. "Ghetto Firefighter" was based on Engine 58 and Ladder 26 in Harlem. In fact it was that book that I started chasing the fires in Harlem back maybe around 1970/71 (?).

The book cover does seem a little confusing though. I guess because it says E5, L8 on it. It was really based on 58/26.

On the cover if you drop the E & the L you have 58....The author Harry Ahearn was a LT in ENG*58...his Son Bill was a FF in ENG*230 in the late '60s / early '70s he also Retired as an FDNY LT  Bill  also owned the now closed Suspenders bar most recently in the Financial District but originally on 2nd Av near the Midtown Tunnel...a few War Years  "big names" worked in the original place & there was always much FD talk going on.

One thing about the book that stuck out for me-   Lt. Ahearn had a fantastic writing style.  Lots of wit, humor and allusions that someone not OTJ might miss.  I imagine that he was a "college man" as they used to say, back when it meant a lot more.

The "War Years"...probably one of the most interesting episodes in urban history inn the United States. There are photographic books like Steve Scher's, autobiographies (but not enough from Brooklyn) and "stories" around the media, We are still waiting for the "Definitive" history of this epic time!
