Tillers to Towers to Rearmounts
« on: July 13, 2018, 10:21:17 AM »
I am sure this has been talked about before but I can not seem to find the forum

Why has:

L-6 & L-40  gone from a Tiller to Rearmount back to Tiller

L-84 gone from Tower to Rearmount

L-151 gone from Tiller to Rearmount

L-173 gone from Tiller to Rearmount

*Not sure if there are others*

I know L-151 when they had a Tiller, I was told by member there that they were told to try a Rear Mount and never got back the Tiller

I believe L6 went back to a tiller, after the Capt. wrote a letter explaining the need for a tiller, navigating their first due response area. Many more rm ladder companies could benefit from a tiller, as the rear mounts have lost the shorter wheel base of the rigs years ago.

TL 84 probably went to rearmount because TL76, TL84 and TL87 were all tower ladders on SI South Shore.

151 could definitely benefit from a tiller. Some of the streets in "the Gardens" are quite narrow and curvy. JMHO

There's a story/rumor (so don't shoot me) that H&L40 got help from then Congressman Charles Rangel so they could get a tiller. ;)

Several "political" attempts have been made thru the years to keep a Tiller....some worked some not....much less today.

The story I heard is Ladder 6 lost its tiller when the then Captain felt it was too slow and he wanted a rearmount.
Ladder 6 had its rearmount maybe 15 years?

When CPT George E. was the CPT of 6 he got the rearmount as he wanted be able to relocate to other areas of the City to get the younger FFs some varied experience in other areas....after he was Promoted & CPT Jay J. came he wanted the Tiller back for maneuverability so in 1998 when LAD*133 was organized they got 6s rearmount & 6 got a Tiller back.
