Ladder 6 always needed a "short" tiller to get around those tight Chinatown streets. Way back in 1937, they were assigned a 1937 Seagrave (#318) 85ft. stick. The rig couldn't maneuver well around their 1st due area and it was eventually reassigned to L26. Their next new rig was a 1941 Seagrave 75ft. stick (#346) that they ran with for 19 years although, it was repowered with a newer 1949 International tractor. Their next rig was their first metal aerial and it was a 1960 Mack C/Maxim 4 section 85ft. tiller. Those 1959-60 Macks were the shortest tillers back then. They had the 1960 Mack/Maxim for 14 years until they were assigned a new 1974 Seagrave 100ft. tiller (SL#7404).
