Chances are Chief Montoya was trained by our own Willy D.

Thank you Joe for giving credit to this newly appointed Chief of Department.

I had the privilege of working with Chief Montoya for several years. As a Firefighter he "excelled" in his performance. I watched him move up in rank from Firefighter to Lt, to Captain, then to Battalion Chief. Each step of the way he proved to be a great asset to the department through his leadership and abilities.

With no Ct Fire Academy or formal training like there is today, his first tour on duty he was given a quick hands on training of operating a charged hose line and climbing ladders in the side parking lot of that firehouse. That training was nicknamed "Parking Lot Probie Training". Shortly after that training as the first due nozzleman he caught a fire on the second floor of an occupied 2 1/2 story frame. With only a couple of quick hours of that hands on training, then Probie Firefighter Montoya did a Great job.

Also as the article states, he has a 33 year career with the US Navy Reserve where he currently is a Lt Commander at the Naval Reserve Station in Newport, R.I.

When America was attacked on 9/11, he was called to active duty in New York City where he spent many months performing an important military function.

I have confidence that Chief Montoya will do a Great job for the members of the Norwich FD, a department of about 60 members in eastern, Ct.

 Can you believe that ?

When I applied, they told me I was "over qualified".

Perhaps they saw the red shirt and thought that would be part of the uniform.

John, I think they were more concerned about the numerous naps and stops in Mickey D's For a few Big Macs while responding. Oh and yes, all members would have to wear red shirts at all times.

Well, Bill, we can always start a letter writing campaign to get you the appointment and have your office in Mickey D's.

A follow up story on the newly selected Fire Chief for Norwich, Ct.

A GREAT GUY who has the respect of all the members of this department and worked very hard every step of the way.

What this article did NOT say however is that Chief Montoya had served within the Elite Special Forces of the U.S. Navy Seal Team.

During 9/11 he was activated assigned to NYC within security operations of the U.S. Navy.

It is a privilege for me to consider him a Personnel Friend and Brother Firefighter.

Best wishes Chief and I think they got the right guy for the job.

Here is that follow up story.
