Maximum Age For an FDNY Proby
« on: January 11, 2019, 06:41:00 PM »
Does anyone know what the max age limit is for the FDNY Academy & becoming a proby?

I ask this out of surprise that FF Pollard was 30 and a Proby.  Also surprised that he did not attend the academy and become a Proby much sooner.

35 is the max age unless you have military time. Also keep in mind that they had a freeze and didnít hire for a few years and when they did it was EMS classes before the Open competitive.

Age requirement has to do with filling for the exam. Must be 17 1/2 by last date of filling period. Canít be older than 29 by first date of filling. Can add up to 6 years for military service. Test only given every 4 years and can take over a year before 1 st group gets hired. List runs 4 years from date it is made official by NYC. Not always the same date as first date of hires.
So with military service could be 35, and add up to another 5 years  could be 40

In FF Pollards case, hired towards the end of the previous list. Probation is 18 months, he was due to get off probation. Probably hired when 28, could have been 23 when he took the test.

Ok, I think that explains the time gap - I thought it was a bit strange for him to have waited so long, instead of starting in his early 20's.
