Pretty interesting - they used fire robotics in tackling this fire.

Is FDNY considering this?

Researchers at MIT are working day and night on the FDNY robot. The big computer problems are: 1) getting it to complain in the kitchen, particularly about the mayor, 2) understanding a Brooklyn accent, 3) understanding a mutual, 4) not telling a chief what to do, 5) doing the dishes, 6) paying union dues, and 7) knowing that a playing bagpipe is not a female cat in heat.

Notre-Dame’s Safety Planners Underestimated the Risk, With Devastating Results

An  infuriating lack of planning and forethought, at best.

underestimating the risk is an understatement! I can't believe that is not normal for fire alarm systems to directly notify the fire departments in France. The article stated that he didn't want to bother the fire department with false alarms? Also interesting how some major buildings like the Louvre and several others have members of the fire department stationed on site. It certainly seems like Notre Dame is as important as any of the other bldg. cited for having on-site firefighters.

I visited the place in 2015 and access to the building is very limited. Once inside the structure,  huge open spaces as you can imagine then the exposed wooden roof structure. You would need an interior aerial ladder! One of the photos had a great shot of the hose reels the FD deploys on all structure fires. evidently, the first fire alarm received was investigated and nothing was found. Second time was a charm!

I'll be curious to know if any heads will roll among those responsible for the (by U.S. standards) atrocious fire and life safety standards not only at the cathedral but, apparently, throughout France as far as the automatic alarms to FD are concerned.

Can Dec or any of our other overseas brothers on The Site provide information as to their own jurisdictions, whether in the EU, South America or elsewhere?

Also, if anyone has French language skills, please let the rest of us know of any political and professional follow-up.

Actually this is not the fire department that is on site. In France, every place that hosts shows, concerts or big malls, big museums etc. has private companies trained to detect and fight starting fires, while calling 911. Those private companies are at a command post inside the building, they walk around the building, wait for fire alarms, and start to fight any starting fire. If a fire alarm goes off, they locate the place and go check what's happening. If they don't see anything, they generally don't call the fire department. They can also provide first aid with basic EMT classes. Their diploma is a national certificate but they are not firefighters.
