Without these men and women there would not be the bbq's, refrigerator sales, etc. that are so prevalent today. It is a shame that today's American society has no idea of the real meaning of Memorial Day and to make it worse, they don't seem to care. Also, most people cannot even say Veteran....it's always vetran. To all those who have made the Supreme Sacrifice and to all our still living members of the Armed Forces..thank you, God Bless you and peace be with you.

I agree with all of the above. It's NOT ABOUT Picnics, a day off, etc.

It is ONE DAY that we as a Country set aside to HONOR those who fought and died for all of us. So that we can be a FREE COUNTRY.

So many family members, mothers, fathers, kids, spouses, have suffered the loss of NEVER seeing their loved one again. They are gone because they fought and died for all of us.

How do you THANK somebody who did that for you ?

My neighbor lost their son in the Iraq War. A good kid. They will NEVER see him again. He's just one and there's so many more like him.

 May they Rest in Peace.

I received this from a Retired FDNY Lt (Kenny B.). I want to pass it on as well. Quote:

"Before you open the pool, pop that beer can and wash down the burger, stop a minute and grab that youngster near you and explain to them exactly what Memorial Day is all about.

And for those who were in the military or involved in any way in the rescue/recovery efforts at the World Trade Center [I consider that working in a war zone] THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE"

Let me also add Iraq and Afghanistan

Mass at Holy Cross Cemetery, a visit to my Grandfather's grave, the end of the parade on Eastern Parkway and a family meal to home while stories of those who were lost were told. The Memorial Days of my childhood.
God bless those who fought and died and may He also bless those who they left behind.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
      In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
      In Flanders fields.

It's sad JK, how soon people forget...as a kid I remember everyone had a "poppy flower" somewhere on them, and back then people used to drive with their car head lights on in memory.

Got mine outside my Supermarket yesterday and wearing proudly.
Thè POPPY,  the only flower to grow over a barren and battle scarred field, a sign of remembrance...
