This was not the case when there was a Div. 12 about 20 years ago.   Leaving SI w/o a rescue unit makes no sense.   Traffic volume on the bridge determines who is sent I think.

Rescue 5 is 8.1 miles away and 15 minutes per Mapquest to this Coney Island address.
Rescue 2 is 11.1 miles away and 26 minutes per Mapquest.
R5 can also respond rapidly into Bay Ridge and Coney Island using the SI Expressway, bridge and Belt Pkwy.

The point about SI coverage is good.  SI always had minimal Rescue/special unit coverage.  Ladder 78 doubled as Rescue 5 in the 1950s and early 60s.  They had a home-made converted hose wagon.  That was in the days when you had to use the ferries to get to SI from Blyyn or Manhattan.  I guess they disbanded R5 when the bridge was built.  (It was not disbanded by Bloomberg back then, but he probably would take credit.)  It still took Rescue 2 probably a half hour or more with the bridge to respond to many parts of SI before Rescue 5 was reorganized at E 160 in the 1980s.

Rescue 2 used to be assigned on the 3rd alarm to Coney Island boxes in the late 60s and 1970s.  There was no rescue or squad on all hands or 2nds.

I understand and respect the need for copyright protection and to prevent unauthorized reproduction, but the "First on Scene" banner across the center of each photo is way too intense.  It makes it difficult to view the content.  Just a suggestion for the future... reduce the contrast of the banner or move it to an edge of the image.   Nice shots, tho,  all in all.

There's a few boxes way down that way that are R-2's. But like was stated before, it's generally accepted that just about anything in the 8th Division in Brooklyn is R-5's.
Step up or Shut up!!!

You need to go to Lou Minutoli's site and send him this note.
