Westmeath Fire & Rescue Service were dispatched to the Hammond Lane scrap metal plant in Athlone on Monday afternoon to what turned out to be a major fire on the site.

Approx 300 to 400 scrapped cars were involved and Firefighters were on scene until it was brought under control some 11hrs later just before 06:00am Tuesday morning.

Some of the units on scene were Alpha’s 2 & 3 from Athlone Station & Alpha 1 from Ferbane Station, Co. Offaly.
