The bid was awarded to Ferrara for 5 new custom rescue apparatus.  They have not started the build yet.

Should be nice looking trucks when they're finished. Did FDNY have Ferrara make custom cabs? And does anyone know if those are the cabs for the rear-mount aerials as well?

Looks like they enclosed the igniter chassis! They have built three rigs for me, they will pay close attention to the FDNY rigs!

Can't figure out why they're getting a new rig for R-1 when their current rig is only 3 years old?  I guess to either put it in reserve, or to have a really nice spare...........

All rescue's have to be replaced together is my understanding

That was always my understanding too.  However when they bought the new R-1 from Pierce they only bought one truck so I assumed that was no longer true.  I do think the members prefer all the trucks are the same so it is easier when multiple units are operating together.  I am surprised Pierce didn't end up with the order says everyone seems to like that truck and it has been doing quite well.  Especially when they have no experience with Ferrara as far as rescues go in high use situations.

I'm quite sure the existing R-1 will become the frontline spare and probably will be kept fully equipped looks like Rescue 6 is now!

I may be wrong but wasn't the R1 Saulsbury was having problems with the Manhattan Roads, and not holding up??

The Pierce was bought with Homeland Security money.  If somebody offers to buy you a new half-million dollar truck, it'd be pretty foolish to say no, especially when it would give you the opportunity to try out a truck brand you've never had experience with.  As for buying all the rescues at once, the first time that was done was with the 1996 HMEs.  The Mack MRs they replaced were all essentially the same truck, but 2 were bought in 1985, 2 in 1988, and the last of the five in 1990.  Prior to that, it seemed to be a catch-as-catch-can operation of procuring rescues. As for why Ferrara got the contract, that's a no-brainer . . . they were the low bidder who satisfied all of FDNY's bidding itches.  And they're NOT the first Ferrara rescues . . . all 5 collapse rescues are Ferraras, although on Mack or Spartan chassis. Does anyone know if Pierce even bid on the new rescues?

Are any of the 1996 HME Rescues still on the roster? If not anyone know where they were sold to?

i think the former R-5 was transfered to hazmat. i had heard that there FDNY owns 10 rescues so i wouldnt be suprised if there was 1 or 2 still around. does anyone know what the current roster for rescues is?

Well I think it is the 2006 at R1, after that you have the 2002 E-one salusburys with R4 taking R1's former rig. I believe that R4's original is now a spare. I believe Rescue 6 is the Spirit of Oklahoma which is the 2002 Freightliner/American LaFrance. I'm not sure about the rest but I believe that one of them is the 2002 Mack MR/General.

Not sure about the rest, but that accounts for 8.
