New rigs won't have the Engine in the back between the members.  It will be under the front seats.  You will have two seats backwards, pretty much in the same spot as now.  The two seats forward will be in the middle, not next to the door.  It will look like the rigs which had all seats facing backwards.

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't 53 truck's donated Spartan have that kind of seating already?

It's a toolbox like many current FDNY engines have now for storing water rescue or hazmat equipment. It will be mounted on the higher rear section of the cab because the front section tilts forward for engine servicing.

In my Co. we have an engine and ladder with cabs laid out just like the one described they're both Pierces, I personaly dont like having the 2 seats in the middle, one reason is you have limited leg room, luckily I'm a small guy but i could imagine for a tall guy sitting there it must suck, another is you cant get in the rig as quick as having both seats right inside the door, and also the FDNY is going to loose alot of storage space due to the fact that they have tools mounted over the engine right now. But I am glad theyre not going with Pierces, the seagraves look much better.
