Chief JK, Thank you for remembering and posting the names and stories of those American Heros that we continue to loose as the result of "Americas Worst Day". I'm afraid that most people have forgotten. And you keep their memory alive. They were all good people, with families and friends, and just doing their job. But so many have forgotten, even though that terrible price is still being paid.

If it's okay, I would like to post the names and some of the stories on other web sites that I frequently visit. Sadly the True story is, many are still suffering from that Terrible Day. I would like to pass this story on, so that many more can remember and won't forget.

From REMA- Retired Emergency Man's Association

To all members,
It is with great sadness that I report the passing of REMA member Tony Mangiaracina (Ret. ESS 1, ESU, ESS 6) on Monday, September 10, 2012. He finally succumbed to the terrible cancer that he had fought so courageously for many months. He died at home as he wished surrounded by his loving family. The courageous battle was a testament to his courage and spirit. Tony would never give up. The dreaded form of cancer was attributed to the toxins he was exposed to when Tony volunteered at Ground Zero after the cowardly attack at the World Trade Center immediately after September 11, 2001. He was sixty-six and joined the NYPD in September 1974. He was a member of the US Marine Corps, NYPD Honor Legion, Fraternal Order of Police and was a key player in organizing the FOP’s yearly participation at the Police Memorial Ceremonies in Washington, DC in May. Known affectionately as “Tony A to Z”, he could always be counted on to be a true team player and always maintained his great sense of humor in any situation. Not only was he well respected within ESU, but he was well know and respected in all levels of the Department.
Tony leaves behind his loving wife, Rita, his children, Jimmy, Christie & husband, Richie, and Lisa & husband, Daniel, as well as four grandchildren. Many of us have visited him in his last weeks and every one remarked how animated and responsive he became when he was once again with "his other family". Tony truly loved his years in the NYPD and I know he felt his proudest achievement was being an E-Man. He will be truly missed by family and friends alike.
Please keep Tony and his entire family in your prayers. May he enjoy eternal happiness with the Lord and join those heroes who went before him.

Beecher Funeral Home provided this obituary:

Thomas R. Van Doran, 61, of Patterson, passed away on Tuesday after a long battle with esophageal cancer.

Thomas was born on May 19, 1951 in the Bronx to the late Eugene and Margaret (Leahy) Van Doran. He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in 1969 and became a New York City firefighter in 1979. After a long courtship, Thomas married Elizabeth Gavaghen on Aug. 5, 1989 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Brooklyn.

Thomas retired from the New York City Fire Department as a battalion chief, after working (and studying) for 29 years, in August 2008. He loved golfing and playing the saxophone for his family. He also enjoyed being a pilot and flying his plane over Putnam Lake. Fortunately, he was a bad golfer and a great pilot—not the other way around.

He is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth, his son Thomas, and his daughter Samantha of Patterson; as well as his brother, Gene (Kathleen) of the Bronx; his sisters: Dorothy Van Doran (predeceased by Jerry Rubin) of Poughkeepsie; Ellen Weinberg (Howard) of Archbald, PA and Nora Staller (Robert) of the Bronx. He is also survived by many, many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church in Patterson (414 Haviland Drive). Interment will follow at St. Lawrence O’Toole Cemetery in Brewster. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Beecher Funeral Home (located on Putnam Avenue in Brewster, 845-279-3615).

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Thomas to:

The New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation (www.nyffburncenter.com)
