Thanks for the posts. Chief.  Reminds me of the mascots you used to see in many firehouses.

Some current mascots on duty:

During the vietnam war many units had scout dogs. Their handler had to carry the dog's food etc, but the other guys helped out, carrying water, etc. Unfortunately these dogs were left in Vietnam for some bullshit reason. Glad to see now we take care of the four legged guys who protected the two legged people. My wife was really upset to see the K-9 having to be put down. GG also showed tears, I have had to do that and it really sucks, your best buddy.

police dog injured
  Eyewitness News

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Bear, a member of the NYPD Transit Bureau's K-9 Unit, sustained four broken teeth and cuts to his tongue when he and his handler responded to the scene of a fight at the 59th Street Subway Station in Manhattan.

Police Officer Vincent Tieniber, 36, sustained a sprained wrist. He was coming to the aid of a fellow officer on the southbound platform of the No. 4 subway at 59th Street and Lexington Avenue Tuesday at 11:15 a.m.

Police Officer Rafael Diaz called for assistance to help break up a fight involving four women, ages 19 to 31.

One woman, 19, was being choked by another 19-year-old. The two women, ages 31 and 22, pushed Officer Diaz as he attempted to stop the assault on the 19-year-old victim.

Officer Tieniber and Bear arrived on the scene moments later.

While in the process of handcuffing one of the women, Ravenia Matos-Davis, age 22 of Queens, Officer Tieniber sustained a sprain to his wrist.

The same woman kicked Bear twice in the German shepherd's mouth, cracking two teeth and chipping two others, cutting his tongue, and leaving scuff marks on his snout.

Although injured, "Bear kept the woman's foot in his mouth, and held on until I could handcuff her," Officer Tieniber recounted.

Bear's damaged teeth didn't penetrate the woman's footwear.

Bear was treated and released from the Animal Medical Center at 510 East 62nd Street in Manhattan.

He is due to return Wednesday when his two canine teeth are expected to be capped, and two others shaved where they are currently chipped, after which time Bear is expected to return to full duty.

Officer Tieniber was treated and released from Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan today. He will also be re-evaluated in coming days to determine when he can return to duty.

Bear and his handler have been in tough spots before. In 2011, at the Broadway Junction station of the A train in Brooklyn, Officer Tieniber spotted three men wanted for robbery, one armed with a pair of scissors.

Officer Tieniber lined all of the suspects against the station wall, and handcuffed them as Bear stood guard, with his big brown eyes fixed intently on the three.

The same year, Officer Tieniber came upon an assault in progress by a suspect armed with a razor at the Atlantic Pacific station of the N,Q,R line.

There, the suspect froze at Bear's bark, allowing Officer Tieniber to make the arrest without further incident.

The duo have also been responsible for tracking wanted suspects and recovering ballistic evidence, employing the combination of Officer Tieniber's handling skills and Bear's olfactory prowess.

Bear, age 6, has been on the job for five years; Officer Tieniber for 11.

The dog's attacker was charged with injuring a police animal, the top charge among four that included disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration (OGA).

Last month, the Legislature passed a bill which makes killing or injuring a police animal a Class E felony. It is currently a Class A misdemeanor.

The legislation, expected to be sent soon to the Governor for his consideration, would become effective November 1.

19-year-old Alexandria James of the Bronx was charged with strangulation and criminal possession of a controlled substance. Her 19-year-old victim sustained bruising, scratches, and reported pain to her neck but refused medical attention.

Tabricia Moore, 31, also of the Bronx, was charged with OGA, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.

He says he knows that it is time but it breaks my heart., Cash is getting a little old but will be taken care by a friend. Can a brain do a search on Chicago Tribune for "When a guide dog needs to retire" PS He is getting another guide dog. GG says thanx!

That's got to be pretty tough for him to say good bye to "Cash". They really are mans best friend whether on the battleground, searching a collapsed building, finding drugs or an accelerant, going after the bad guy, in a firehouse or in our living rooms. What would we do without them ?

PO BURIED W/HIS K-9....RIP....
K-9 laid to rest alongside officer killed in crash by drunk driver

Pontiac police Officer Casey J. Kohlmeier and his K-9 partner Draco were killed in a car accident. (PONTIAC POLICE)

A long line of mourners, including officers with police dogs, gathered in central Illinois Saturday to remember a Pontiac officer who was killed in a crash last month.

A funeral was held Saturday for Casey Kohlmeier, 29, who died along with his canine partner Draco on Oct. 30. Authorities say Kohlmeier's vehicle was hit by a suspected drunken driver on Interstate 55 near Pontiac, about 85 miles southwest of Chicago.

Officials from the Duffy-Baier-Snedecor Funeral Home told The Pantagraph that some mourners waited in three-hour-long line to attend a morning visitation.

His funeral drew thousands determined to pay their respects to the officer who had aspirations of being an FBI agent, The Geneseo Republic reported.

He was buried alongside his loyal partner, Draco.

The Geneseo Republic reported that "Amazing Grace" was played, and when the bagpipes ended, a last call for Kohlmeier and his partner blared over the 911 LivCom.

"All units be advised that XK 103, K-9 officer Casey Kohlmeier, a beloved member of the Pontiac Police Department and Livingston County ProActive Unit, and his K-9 partner Draco, were killed in the line of duty Wednesday, October 30, 2013. XK 103 is now 10-7. He may be gone, but he will never be forgotten. Rest in peace. LivCom cleared."

Jason C. Collins, 33, from South Carolina, was allegedly driving under the influence when his pickup truck left the road and struck a marked police car in the center crossover on I-55 north. Collins was taken into custody shortly after the accident, waived extradition and was taken to Livingston County Jail for arraignment, the MyFoxChicago.com report said.......   We all feel the same. Our pets are with us during our good days and our bad days. On days when nobody else will understand. Somehow I just get the feeling that they do understand better than we think.

They never argue with us and they are always glad to see us.

Maybe it's really not about what we can teach them, but rather it's about what they can teach us.

I have the privilege of working with 3 K9s and their handlers. Even though I am not a handler....You do get attached to the dogs. They truly are one of the members of a Dept.

Sad to see the loss of Yayo at 311/158. They really are "Man's Best Friends".

I can only guess that for the years that "Yayo" spent with the members of 311/158, he had a good life and a good home.

Our pets are our true friends. If you treat them good, they will be good to you in return. They don't care how rich or poor, fat or skinny you are. But it is a very sad day when their time comes.

On 9-1-18 we lost our Penny a roughly 10 yr old Female Maltese/Yorkie due to organ cancers......on 10-27-18 we got our Smokey a then Male 4 month old Terrier....he came from the same Rescue Group in Tennessee called "Goofy Foot Dog Rescue" www.goofyfootrescue.org/about.html it was the same procedure filing online & seeing available Dogs online then getting screened ....they a have route that roughly every 2 weeks they truck the selected dogs in crates in a cattle car like trailer up from Tenessee up as far as New Hampshire.... their closest stop to NYC is in Bedminster NJ the same spot where we picked up Penny .....Penny was held by a hoarder & had a bad life previously...Smokey was born in a good home (from a woman's Dog & her Mothers Dog inadvertantly mating) the woman was now herself pregnant again & gave the Pup up.....he as a Puppy is very active of course & gives the Cats more of a run for their money than Penny...on our trip to NC last week he was excellent in the truck all the way..... PS American Airlines wants $125.00 EACH WAY to bring him as a carry on !....glad he does not mind the truck.

One balmy afternoon on Knickerbocker Av L 112, we opened the apparatus door. Without hesitation and in a flash a white chihuahua came charging in like he owned the joint. We looked up and down the street for it's owner, but there was no one in sight, this dog just appeared! Well of course we fed him and groomed him. And then in the very fine tradition of Knickerbocker firehouse someone took out the black shoe polish and gave him spots. Presto! We now had a "toy" dalmation. After a few hours he took off again, had enough of our shenanigans. I often wondered what he owners thought when they saw Sparky back home.

This is a video of a poem written by the late movie actor Jimmy Stewart about his dog named "Beau". He read it on the Johnny Carson show on July 28, 1981. Of course Johnny Carson is no longer with us as well.

Not only is it a well written poem that many of us can relate to, but it is also especially important to me because my wife, Helen, aka "Pumpkin" (who has since passed on too) and I had made our first and only trip to L.A. We were at this show.

It was a two purpose vacation. I would check out the L.A. City and County FDs during the day, while she would go to one of those famous L.A. area beaches. One evening we went to this show and Jimmy Stewart was the guest appearance.

Hear is the poem that Jimmy Stewart wrote about his dog named "Beau". Hopefully, they are together again.
