USS Fitzgerald
« on: June 18, 2017, 04:44:36 PM »
I am sure most, if not all of you, on this site have been keeping up with the collision of the USS Fitzgerald and a container ship off the coast of Japan.  Seven Sailors are confirmed dead in this tragic event.  Sadly, one of the sailors killed, Gunners Mate Dakota Rigsby, was a firefighter in the local volunteer fire department where I live in Lake Monticello, VA. Some of the members of this site have had the opportunity to visit this firehouse and share a meal with the Brothers.  Dakota was an outstanding young man who served his community and country.  His loss, as well as the loss of the other six sailors, is a tragedy for our country, and hits very close to home for all of us at Lake Monticello.  His mother is also a member of the Lake Fire and Rescue Department and a Corrections Officer.  I ask that you keep Gunners Mate Rigsby, his mother, and the rest of his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Call me a skeptic on this "collision." The diagrams shown on TV news show the container ship making a "U" turn and heading right back into the Fitzgerald. Am I looking too far into this? Somehow I have the feeling this is going become more than an accident as the investigation gets moving. JMHO

I would be skeptical of any diagram showing that container ship making a "U" turn.  Ship like that take miles to make a turn of any type.  The US Navy vessel is much more maneuverable and with all of their detection equipment on board should have known well in advance at the container ship within the area and should have easily been able to track its course and any deviations from that.

My condolences go out to all the family members and friends U.S. Navy Sailors who were lost because of this tragedy. Especially to those of us who know Steve E., "fltpara16", on the loss of his friend.

Yes, some of us from this site did visit the Lake Monticello Fire Dept where we were all treated very well as their guest. In this case, it is a loss to our entire country, as well as to our Brother Firefighters. Here is a young man who not only had served his community, but his country as well.

Every single day our Military Members, our Police Officers, and our Firefighters, put their lives on the line for all of us. Their families pay the price of worrying all the time about their loved ones return home safely. An extremely difficult job in itself.

Prayers for the friends and family members on their personal tragic loss. May gunners mate Dakota Rigsby, as well as the other U.S. Navy members that this country has lost, Rest in Peace.
