A woman was seriously injured last night after she got her leg caught between an elevator car and the shaft wall at a Brooklyn hospital, authorities said.

Firefighters and workers at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in East Flatbush worked feverishly for more than an hour to free the woman on the eighth floor as she lapsed in and out of consciousness.

"We used two jaws of life to try to push the car back enough to release the leg," said FDNY Deputy Chief Wayne Cartwright.

"When we couldn't push it back far enough we ended up cutting a hole in the car."

It wasn't immediately clear whether the woman -- bleeding profusely during the ordeal -- was a visitor or employee, although hospital officials said she wasn't a patient.

They didn't know how the woman, who was rushed to Kings County Hospital, ended up in the elevator shaft shortly before 5 p.m.

It's also not clear if she was in the elevator at the time.

"She had everything that could have been done for her that was humanly possible," said Cartwright.
