31 workers rescued after Los Angeles tunnel collapse 7/9/25

FDNY has had its share of a few incidents involving the decades long construction of NYC water tunnel 3. Ironically, 34 years prior to this incident in LA, Los Angeles newspapers were reporting the death of Ternager Don-re Carroll who was playing with friends inside the construction access to one of the shafts under construction for tunnel 3. He and his friends made access off of Harrison Ave and I believe 180 St. Carroll plunged 500 feet down to his death. The ERS box was activated and members from Ladder 33 entered the subterranean site only to discover the boy had fallen down the shaft. FDNY members recovered his body by making access to the tunnel via the valve house in Van Cortlandt park. A valve 250 feet below the street had to be dismantled so members could enter the tunnel. Members of Rescue 3 and I believe Rescue 4 walked 4 miles - hundreds of feet below the Bronx streets to recover the body and then carry the remains another 4 miles back to Van Cortlandt Park.
