Hook and Ladder Company 40 was established in 1908 and placed in a new firehouse designed by Howard Constable at 6 Hancock Place.
They later moved into a Soviet style firehouse with Engine Company 37 (from 503 W 126th St) on West 125th Street. The house sat empty for several years until purchased by dance artist George Faison in 1999 who converted the 10,400 square foot space into a community theater and living space.

It has now been purchased by the National Action Network for an estimated $5 million to $7 million for the property and renovation. The NAN was founded in 1991 by the Rev. Al Sharpton. It will be renamed the House of Justice Rev. Jesse Jackson's Workshop. It will part of the NAN's effort to push back on the gentrification of Harlem. In 2000, the population of the Central Harlem was 77 percent Black. In 2023 this fell to 50 percent.

In the 1970's 40 Truck's classic "Yo' Momma" move was when they painted 40=26 + 14 on the roof of the cab of their tillered rig. You couldn't see it from the street.
