No sprinklers.  Honolulu building code did not require for buildings prior to 1971.

I was just watching the report on the national news, the authorities are now going to look into making sure all buildings have sprinklers.

It has always struck me as incredible, that it takes a tragedy, to make laws change and codes change - and usually in the aftermath of fatalities.

I agree, how many fires and losses of life is it going to take to get people to realize there needs to be changed in building codes around the world.

Building codes are not retroactive.  For 46 years, the opportunities to install sprinklers were not taken because sprinklers were not required at the time of construction.  An identical building could not be built without sprinklers today, but an existing building can remain.

Whether throwing victims into volcanoes to appease the gods, or requiring that people must die before seriously considering sprinkler protection, we still require human sacrifice.

Typical to this type of incident, not one resident even inquired whether sprinklers are present. Now that the fire has occurred the question is why not? The media is saying the HFD was run out of the building? Maybe the fire floor but not the building! It all goes back to education. We, the fire department, must up the pressure on all parties, codes, construction and vendors, to require the best safety features in all residential and commercial high-rise and multi-family construction. Just my humble opinion! Yes, my has has a sprinkler system!

E-29 & H&L-29 1st Due right down the street

See how well being close by worked!

What are you trying to say? who says they weren't out on another run?

Doesn't matter where they were. Fire , unchecked on the 26th floor is going to be blowing and going by the time the members can access the fire floor.  Whether they are, in the building, next door or a mile away. City Hall or the management company will us the proximity of the fire company to justify no sprinkler but as we all know, never a great outcome. Just glad no members were killed or seriously injured.

Looking at the footage , looks like this Department like many other large cities deployed the HeroPipe . The way this fire was blowing you can see it was a big help in knocking it down and cooling the fire floor. Good Job .
