I beleive it should be E331 special called with a high rise fan as they carry one. I a  :)lso heard that 285 relocated to 331.

I see L143 came in on the first alarm - was L142 or  L173 on another call when the first alarm was sounded?

Could someone explain to me these compactor fires. Do they run the whole length of the bldg? How does a fire start on a floor, example above 15th floor. Would think that a fire would start at the bottom. Never seen a compactor in a apt bldg. Grew up in Canarsie and then pops moved us to the Island.
Last question, how come such a problem with the smoke, does it pour out of all the floors. Thank you, was just curious.

Depending on the building, they have multiple trash compactors on various floors.  A vertical shaft connects to the top of the compactor and can be assessed from any floor.  People open the door on their floor, throw their trash in, and it falls down the chute into the compactor.  This was a 20-story High-Rise so most likely had a compactor every 5 or so floors.  Once these things go on fire (or more likely something in the garbage catches on fire) the smoke travels up the chute and out onto every floor.  It can also travel out of the chute and up staircases.

Remember the big fatal compactor fire at the Shaumburg Plaza apts. [Fifth Ave & 111th St.] a few years back  in the 80's?
