CHESAPEAKE FIREFIGHTERS RESCUE INJURED WORKER FROM CONSTRUCTION TRENCH
Chesapeake, VA (February 5, 2026): Chesapeake Fire Department crews responded to a construction site in the 900 block of Battlefield Boulevard North at approximately 8:45 a.m. for a reported injured worker.
Construction was underway for a new apartment complex when contractors were placing storm drain infrastructure inside an approximately 10-foot-deep trench. At the time of the incident, contractors were using protective trench shielding. During the operation, one worker sustained a lower leg injury and was unable to safely exit the trench without assistance.
The Chesapeake Fire Department’s Rescue Company 1 and Ladder 5 were dispatched as part of an industrial accident response. Firefighters implemented a low-angle rescue system and utilized a Stokes basket to carefully remove the injured worker from the trench. The rescue operation was completed at approximately 9:08 a.m.
The patient was transferred to a waiting medic unit for treatment and transported to a local emergency room. No additional injuries were reported.
The incident is under investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
