December 22 is a day of rememberance for the Chicago Fire Department. On that date in 1910 Chief Horan and 23 other firefighters died on a frigid morning following a collapse of a large warehouse. On that date in 2010 2 more Chicago firefighters answered their last alarm when a roof collapsed on them. Ironically members of the Department were at a memorial service for the first incident when the alarm was sounded for the second fire. Until 9-11 this was the largest single loss of firefighters of a city department.

RIP - members of CFD lost.

Grump - the Texas City Fire Dept also lost 27 members at a 1947 explosion as well as 3 FFs from a neighboring department in the tragic blast. The department was all volunteer back then but became a paid department a few years after the blast.

Mack, you are correct on the Texas City incident. That is why I made the distinction between paid and vollie. Bad day no matter what your affiliation was.
