Hello.  I'm searching for cast iron pedestals to bring a couple FDNY call boxes back to life.  A friend of mine (a retired fire chief from Wisconsin) bought a VF & a JCR head from a scrap pile in N.Y. back in the late 70s.  All the parts are there for both boxes except the heavy pedestals that they sit on.  I see pictures of headless pedestals online.  Do they ever get removed from the street?  What about knockdowns?  If all the parts were there, I may be able to weld them back together.  He does have a spare VF door and inner box that he would be available for trade.  Any help that you could give me would be much appreciated.

There was a time, years ago, when the City would sell or auction them off. I cannot recall which City Agency it was but I do know it was three letters. They had a yard in Brooklyn under the Brooklyn Bridge. Maybe Chief K. can enlighten you and I as to what the name of that surplus agency was.

Back then they were auctioned off as scrap (along with a lot of other City surplus items) in BKLYN on water St below the Bridge i belive it was DCAS ? that ran it.  They do appear on ebay from time to time but are not cheap.
