1) Are they 24 hours and if so, are they assigned a particular boro or citywide.
2) Do they have the same Powers as a Police/Peace Officer
3) Is the Fire Scene unit staffed or just manned when called.
thanks guys

Rob, The FDNY Marshalls do have power of arrest and do carry a weapon. If they apprehend a suspect, they are usually booked at the nearest pct. Also I do believe there a marshalls covering the city 24 hrs  day.

FDNY Fire Marshals are armed Law Enforcement Officers with full powers of arrest and training time with the NYPD.  The operate with both FDNY and NYPD and I believe may operate on both PD and FD radio channels (for example I know at one point they had the NYPD's 10-13 signal available to them).

(i) The chief and deputy fire marshals, the supervising fire marshals and
the fire marshals of the bureau of fire investigation of the New York City
fire department;

Over the past few years the Bureau of Fire Investigation has been greatly downsized. Today, other then HQ. the marshals work from at lease three based. SIU (Special Investigations Unit come out of the qtrs of Eng 211, then there are Citywide South & Citywide North bases. I am not sure if the Auto Sq is still in service. They were working from Lad # 20 qtrs in Lower Manhattan.

At one time this was a civilian job, but now its only open to firefighters. The NYC Fire Marshals have more legal power then NYPD police officers.

i have a few questions
how many many fire marshels does FDNY employ?
what are the requirements to become one?
what do they carry?
where are fire marshells trained/qualify for firearms?
what vehicles do they drive?

Zack, heres what I know. There are about 140 Fire Marshalls in NYC. In order to become a Fire Marshall, you must be a FDNY member first and pass the Fire Marshalls Exam. It is considered a promotion within the dept. Then you must complete a 13 week training program. They do carry weapons.

Fire Marshals over the years had the power to legally remove evidence or even seize business records from a property without the need of a signed court order since they were able to write their own subpoenas.

Back in the 80's the bureau had over 350 members. Cut backs has caused the bureau to be downsized in recent years.  Their Citywide North Base
has recently been reopened to cover Queens, The Bronx, & Northern Manhattan.  Their most famous group were the "RED CAPS".

The Marshals are broken down into bases subdivided into Squads. The base has an assigned commander & maybe an assistand base commander. Then the next lower subdivisions are the 'Squad'. This is a work group & also can be a subdivision of that group. Two marshals make up a team but on the radio they are called "Squad 31 Adam, Boy, or Charlie" & so on. The Supervising Fire Marshal for that Squad (work group) would be "Squad 31".

Over the years they did provide 24-hour coverage from the borough bases, not sure about now.

However, they have had many unmarked undercover vehicles in the past that I had knowledge of.
