Gatlinburg,TN 30 Structures on Fire Including 16 Story Hotel

Has anybody actually seen a story that said the hotel was destroyed in the fire? I've seen videos taken by people inside the flames all around the building but have actually not see anything that said or showed that it was destroyed. Hopefully it wasn't.

The hotel is intact. Fire did not enter the Park Vista. We sent an Engine Company with 5 and the chief to Gatlinburg. Cookeville is located 3 hours west of Gatlinburg. They have returned but others have replaced them.We have a statewide mutual aid system in TN and this is the first large scale activation of the system. The fire enveloped a large area around Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. I have a friend who had a cabin that overlooked the Dollywood complex, key word is had! Largest fire in 100 years in Tennessee. When said and done my prediction will be 300 structures destroyed.

Thanks for the reply, It was my feeling but I didn't ever hear anything for sure. Glad to hear that the Tennessee mutual aid system worked, hope and pray it's never needed again. You brothers stay safe! I'm not sure if all states have a great mutually system like that I know some do.

Latest update 7 dead, 50 injured, They were making rescues today. Still active fires wildland and structure. Total structures are over 400! Noticed companies that are 1:30 west of me and we are 3 hours west.

If mutual aid from 4 1/2 hours away within TN is being called, was any mutual aid being called from closer locations in adjacent states?

Had a similar fire up here in May. City of 88000 completely evacuated. Fire departments from 500 miles away had rigs and crews there.

Good question! My understanding is North Carolina was working one side. Had a briefing yesterday about the response. The biggest thing was the delay in calling for resources. Gatlinburg committed all resources to the Chimney top 2 fire when the wind picked up and changed direction from the south. They were overwhelmed. The area basically has limited access which created a two fold problem, response of resources and evacuation of residents and guest. Lessons learned regarding resource allocation, communication and when to call for help. Our California brothers have this down to a science but a first occurance in Tennessee.
