From Hampton FD:

On January 21, 2026, at approximately 5:54 p.m., the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue (HDFR) received a call for a multi-alarm residential structure fire in the 90 block of W. County Street. Units were dispatched and arrived at approximately 5:58 p.m. HDFR’s Engine 2 noted visible smoke in the sky when leaving their station.
Upon arrival, crews found a residential structure with smoke and flames visible from the exterior. Two occupants had self-evacuated the residence with injuries. Immediate medical care was rendered.
Bystanders reported that individuals were trapped inside the residence. Crews immediately made entry to search for additional tenants. Crews located and rescued one individual in the home, assisted a second individual out of the structure, and began fire attack.
Upon further inspection, it was determined that the structure had been converted from a single-family residence to a multi-family dwelling.
Additional resources from Newport News Fire Department, Poquoson Fire & Rescue, Norfolk Fire-Rescue, and Langley Air Force Base Fire Department were provided to support on-scene fire suppression and backfill Hampton stations, ensuring continuous service to the city.
In total, five civilians and one firefighter were transported to the hospital. Of the five patients transported, two individuals succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital, three other individuals are being treated for smoke inhalation and burn injuries. During the incident, a mayday call was issued and then terminated for a firefighter who fell through an exterior roof and then self-extricated with their crew. The firefighter sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident remains under investigation by Hampton Fire Marshal’s Office.
