He was climbing over the jersey wall from one side of the highway to the other and fell into a 3 foot wide void between lanes. Fell around 30'
This is the second fatal incident that I am familiar with, a relatives boyfriend climb over a jersey wall and fell into a void.
Was a night and very little indication that the void existed. His lanes were the high side of the hill with a void between the lanes to the low side which were in an elevated in bridge like fashion.
Virginia State Police received calls of two separate incidents at Interstate 395 (a wide high speed access highway a few miles south of the Pentagon and Washington DC) on the Alexandria-Arlington County line. One call involved a three-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of I-395 while the other call involved a vehicle fire in the HOV lane, which was open to southbound traffic. Incident took place during rush hour, limited visibility, wet weather. Arlington County Fire Department (ACFD) and Alexandria Fire Department (Alex) responded to the scene of the car fire. Alex has ALS Medic 206 (also an engine, heavy rescue, medic and bn chief) in nearby location (Station 206). Alex Medic 206 stopped in the northbound lanes of I-395 along the HOV lanes to get to burning vehicle. Separating the I-395 lanes from the HOV lanes are 2 cement barriers separating the northbound lanes from the HOV lanes. There is a 3 ft gap between the two barriers - with no pavement. Alex Paramedic Joshua Weissman, Medic 206, was climbing over the cement barrier to get to the burning vehicle when he fell through the gap and into a rocky Four Mile Run Creek, approximately 30 feet below the interstate. Weissman was extricated from the creek by Alex and ACFD firefigthers. He was a very highly thought of, well-liked member of an outstanding fire department.
