For Today's Responders, 1937 Texas Tragedy Still Carries Lessons for Avoiding Disaster | response.restoration.noaa.gov
This incident was one of the first assignments for UPI cub reporter Walter Cronkite of Houston (San Jacinto High School)
Cronkite would go on to report combat in WWII, the Nuremberg Trials, the assassinations of JFK, RFK, MLK, the Vietnam War, riots, the Apollo moon landings, and, of course, anchor CBS Nightly News.
Years later he observed: " I did nothing in my studies nor in my life to prepare me for a story of the magnitude of the New London tragedy, nor has any story since that awful day equaled it."
