NYC, Fire Escapes Could Be a Thing of The Past

Almost guaranteed that in another generation fire escapes will be touted by developers and landlords as "aesthetic enhancements evocative of old New York" and worth an additional 10% on the rent or selling price.  Whatever works for another buck.  Wait and see.

Eliminating  FE's would be a big mistake.

That would be correct. A large % of people in my area would have no place to dry their laundry or plant their

herbs

Yup, this makes me feel safe ... an architect and a construction historian and lecturer making decisions on what's the best way to provide safe evacuation routes from burning buildings. Obviously these folks as well as rich developers are the ones who should be making these decisions, after all ... I'm sure their decisions are made based exclusively on what's the best way to protect residents as well as the firefighters who must rescue them and perform extinguishment operations when a fire occurs.

East Village Explosion Renews SoHo Residents' Fear of Fire Escape Removal

I don't think it will be difficult for the developers and real estate interests to get this through.  Considering that they were able to get the City Council and DoB to approve the 18(?) story building at 24th Street an 11th Avenue where tenants drive their vehicles onto an elevator which takes them to the parking area in their apartment, I don't think removing fire escapes or any other alternate means of egress which get in the way of profit is beyond reality.
