Old and New Apparatus Pictures

Thanks Kevin for posting this. The guys got some Great Rig Shots. I sure liked seeing the Excellent photos of the Old Rescue 2 which I rode in way back in 1968, and seeing the ALF Rearmount Ladder that was TCU 732. And there's plenty more. Top Shelf.

Looks like TCU 732 is parked outside the quarters on 286/135 on Myrtle Ave. Did this rig ever serve as a front line piece and if so where?

Yes, as L166 and L52

The Maroon ALF RM that originally was TCU 732 was stored in the Qtrs of 286/135 during the non adaptive response hours...when it was active.. 1430 to 0030 they responded out of the Qtrs of ENG*277 on Knickerbocker Ave where LAD*112 wound up after the Madison St FH was closed.....TCU 732 & 731 (which was stored in ENG*288 & operated out of 209/102 during the A.R. hours) bracketed LAD*108 but really did not slow anybody down since there was plenty of work to go around at that time....the TCU s just added to LADDER Co. availability.......but getting back to the ALF RM....after operating as TCU*732 when that was disbanded the Rig became the original apparatus of LAD*176 when they were formed in the TIN HOUSE......all the TCU LAD s were unique rigs....712 & 731 were both the old 144' Mack Magirus RM with new 100' Grove Aerials.

I grew up near 286/135, I never remember seeing that rig there. Maybe I was too young to remember it. I can't even believe it fit into their firehouse with the other 2 rigs there.

The rig was assigned to Ladder 176 in 1972 when the second sections of 217 and 233 were disbanded so it never was to be seen again on Myrtle Ave. after the fall of '72.

I found picture 19 very interesting - anybody have an idea where this photo was taken -you have L25 in the foreground and E320 in the background

Picture 3 should be Field Comm 2 (Atlantic Ave location), about 1970, which responded from Eng 259 in Queens.  Field Comm 2 responded to All Hands (Doubtfull will hold) and above in Bklyn and Queens.  Field Comm 1 responded to All Hands (Doubtfull) in Man and Bnx from Engine 39. No one went to SI back then.  You don't see many pictures of those Field Comm units.

Well that explains it. I was only born the fall of 72 so I wouldnt have seen it. The picture looks later like maybe the late 70's and by then I was always running down to the avenue to see where the fire trucks were going.

What would have been in the back of those Field Comm's back in the day?
Would 1 or 2 men staff it?
Wonder when the first Field Comm unit went in service?

Rob, I think they had an FDNY Lt and a civilian Dispatcher manning the Field Com. As I remember in the back was basically a large radio with a hand held microphone. Also a desk and chair. They also had a tape recorder to replay radio messages. But no computers or cellphones in the early days that I saw the inside of one. It was Field Comm 2 and was at a job in Brooklyn.

Does anyone know when the dispatchers went to a civilian job? I remember my father and several of his uniformed friends doing light duty in the Queens C.O. as a dispatcher in the late fifties.

my guess is somewhere in Queens for a greater alarm fire maybe  ???

As far as I know, Dispatcher has always been a civilian job. They were part of the UFA at one time, and there were light duty guys working in the offices back in the day. I'm very happy to see these shots, as many of them from the late 70s up til today bring back some memories. Especially the apparatus shots.

PS Harry taught me when I came on the job, and was my supervisor, and chief at one time.

QUIZ QUESTION: From the collection of photos that started this thread,  the truck photo below is obviously a spare,  what company did this spare come from? (Should be very easy)...

Could it be L38.
