Is it true that the Paris Fire Brigade is a unit of the French army responsible for fire protection and supression?

Yes, Grump, that is true. In army terms, they are "sappers" (combat engineers), thus the department's title "Sapeurs Pompiers de Paris" rather than just "Pompiers de Paris".  The Paris FD is the 3rd largest department in the world, behind only Tokyo and FDNY.

French Fire Departments are under the French Army with the exception of Marseille, which is under the French Navy.

Only Fire Departments of Paris and Marseille belong to the French Army, because of the History. Paris is managed by a department of the "land forces", and Marseille by the Navy. FF are trained with short army classes and then a regular FF/EMT programme.

Other Fire Departments in France are civil FD.

I had a late acquaintance who lived in Paris in the 1950's. At the time he worked for the CIA. One night he had a dinner party at his central Paris apartment. During preparations, the oven was set on fire. While extinguishing the fire, the local fire brigade was summoned. My friend was a Naval Academy graduate and served on a destroyer after WWII in China. Nothing surprised him. After the fire was extinguished, the group returned to the wine and crepes. Minutes later, there was a tentative knock on the door. It was the fire brigade. Le Capitaine offered profound regrets for their delayed response. It turnedout their rig wouldn't start (who hasn't been there...). So... they had to take the Metro (subway)! I wonder who signed that fire report.

Here's the 1st interior pictures, surprisingly it isn't as I feared it would be

Pretty interesting - they used fire robotics in tackling this fire.

Is FDNY considering this?

Just reported on Eyewitness News:

Disney, has pledged $5-Million dollars to rebuild Notre Damn.

Researchers at MIT are working day and night on the FDNY robot. The big computer problems are: 1) getting it to complain in the kitchen, particularly about the mayor, 2) understanding a Brooklyn accent, 3) understanding a mutual, 4) not telling a chief what to do, 5) doing the dishes, 6) paying union dues, and 7) knowing that a playing bagpipe is not a female cat in heat.
