There's a good discussion on another post regarding Tower Ladders vs Rear Mounts.

Here I was wondering what your thoughts were regarding FDNY type Tower Ladders vs Ladder Towers (i.e. buckets mounted on aerial ladders on either rear mounted or mid mounted apparatus).

Just wondering what you think.

As a FDNY Veteran of over 30 years, 20 of those years working in busy Tower Ladders there is rarely an advantage of Aerial Ladders over Tower Ladders. There are only 2 advantages of aerial ladders: #1 normally longer reach 100 ft. or more VS. 75 or 95 feet for Tower Ladders normally.
#2 A properly position aerial ladder will allow for the removal of a larger number of people at the same time. Aerial Tower Type ladders = A heavy duty aerial ladder with a Bucket/Basket on the end is the best of both perhaps. Rear or Mid Mounted Tower Ladders often have a longer bed ladder length that can make positioning in tight streets or area move complicated. Tower Ladders allow for elevated Large Caliber Streams and safer more expedient of people from the fire building or exposure. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired (Also Known as "Bucket Bob")
