Kentland firefighter killed in line of duty in Afghanistan known for 'courage, character'

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. (ABC7) — A Kentland Volunteer firefighter was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan.
Ladderman Christopher Slutman is being remembered as a "father, husband, brother, son and friend who displayed moral character and courage," according to the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page.
Slutman is survived by his wife and three daughters.
Slutman, a staff sergeant with the United States Corps, was fatally wounded in Afghanistan.
He joined the Kentland Fire Department Company 33 in February 2000 and served the residents of Landover and Prince George's County. Slutman is survived by his wife and three daughters.
Slutman was also a member of the New York City Fire Department. During his tenure with the FDNY, he received the Fire Chiefs Association Memorial Medal for his "heroic actions" on a multiple alarm taxpayer fire in July 2013, according to the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page.
Flags are being flown at half staff to honor the memory of Slutman. The flags include the American flag, the New York State and city flags, and the MOW-MIA flag on all city buildings as well as stationary flags throughout the five boroughs of the city.
"It is with regret the FDNY announces the line of duty death of FF Christopher Slutman, L-27, appointed Sept. 14th, 2003, which occurred Monday April 8th 2019, as a result of injuries while on active duty with @USMC," according to the NYCFireWire Twitter page.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio remembered Slutman during a Tuesday news conference and held a moment of silence.
“We are now as a city in mourning once again for a fallen hero, Christopher Slutman, a 15-year veteran of the FDNY and a United States Marine, who died in Afghanistan yesterday while serving his nation," said de Blasio.
“I had the honor of presenting him in 2014 with the Fire Chief’s Association Memorial Medal after he had rescued an unconscious woman from a burning apartment in the South Bronx. This unquestionably is an example of the measure of this man. Christopher Slutman is an American hero, a New York hero, and we mourn his loss today. Our hearts go out to his wife Shannon and his three children. They are in our thoughts and prayers. And we are also providing all the solidarity and support we can to his colleagues at Ladder 27 in the Bronx who are hurting, and to all the members of the FDNY who lost a family member.”
