FDNY Fire Service Line of Duty Death

April 14, 1927 - LODD
Fireman Henry Holster, 44
Engine 73

FDNY. Bronx, New York

Fireman Holster was killed while responding to an alarm. The alarm turned out to be a false alarm.

Fireman Henry Holster of Engine 73 met his death while responding to what turned out to be a false alarm. Engine 73 was proceeding west on 156th Street on its way to the box at 156th Street and Jackson Avenue. A delivery truck was turning from Westchester Avenue onto 156th Street and was blocking 156th Street. The driver of Engine 73 seeing the roadway blocked, veered sharply to avoid the truck but smashed into an elevated pillar. Holster and two other members of the company were thrown off the rig. Holster received a fractured skull and died shortly after arriving in the hospital. To see if the box worked, a ten-year old boy pulled the alarm. Holster had just reported for the night tour when the alarm came in. He was forty-four years old, married and had two children. (From "The Last Alarm" by Boucher, Urbanowicz & Melahn, 2007)

RIP. Never forget.
