While operating at a single alarm fire, he suffered severe smoke inhalation and died as a result.


Lieutenant Charles J. Franck fought a smoky fire in a top floor apartment at 235 East Ninth Street. The fire was quickly extinguished and Lieutenant Franck removed his mask upon returning to the street. He took a couple of gasps of air and collapsed. He was worked on for over an hour before being pronounced dead. He had served twenty-three years in the Department and was forty-six years old. He was married and the father of four children.
