BC Acting (Captain) William J. Weiland, 38
Ladder 9
FDNY. Manhattan, New York
A five-story brick warehouse stocked with furniture, cigars, and dresses, was fully involved in fire on arrival of firemen, with extension to other buildings. While acting as battalion chief, Captain Weiland was killed when he fell from a ladder while directing operations. Many other firemen were injured and overcome while operating at the five-alarm blaze.
